Cellular Materials Applications

Engineers designing armored vehicles, automobiles, ships, and aircraft are searching for novel solutions to a diverse set of problems that can easily be met by CMI's Microtruss™ technology. CMI is actively pursuing a variety of applications in which blast and ballistic force mitigation, lightweight structural strength and high efficiency thermal management requirements are critical.

Examples of applications in development or production include:

  • Blast and/or Ballistic protection armor for military platforms and buildings.
  • Structurally strong, magnetic-field-generating panels for hypersonic space vehicles.
  • Space Re-entry vehicle parts which provide thermal management as well as structural support.
  • Passive Jet Blast Deflectors capable of supporting structural load and transferring heat.
  • Munitions container structures which offer impact/blast energy absorption from accidental or sympathetic detonations.

Examples of potential applications for CMI's cellular materials:

  • Use in conjunction with shape memory alloys to design earthquake-resistant buildings.
  • Use in automobile bumpers and headliners.
  • Use for power storage in fuel cells.
  • Use for catalytic support.
